Memorandum of Understanding
regarding the proposed Rolwaling Mountain Legacy Institute (RMLI)
- No program will be initiated without the approval and participation of the Rolwaling community. The NGO Mount Everest Summiters Club (SC) will determine how to establish that there is a community-wide consensus in favor of the establishment of the RMLI.
- SC will establish a standing Oversight Committee that will participate in negotiations to determine the structure and goals of the RMLI, and will act as a liaison with the Rolwaling community, particularly in arranging for food and accommodations for RMLI personnel.
- The purpose of the RMLI will be to co-ordinate and monitor research and development in the Rolwaling Valley.
- The RMLI will be managed by the NGO Mountain Legacy. Mountain Legacy will find suitable partners (universities, research and development organizations, and so on) to collaborate on the RMLI.
- The RMLI will be operated on a not-for-profit basis, but will charge participants a modest fee to cover actual expenses, to ensure the continuity of the RMLI, and to provide equitable compensation to the Rolwaling community for resources and loss of privacy (taking into account that the RMLI will already be contributing to the community through the purchase of food and accommodations, as well as through development projects and promotion of tourism).
