E-conference postings are ciculated by means of the Mountain Legacy Google group, which you can join at http://groups.google.com/group/MountainLegacy, and on the e-conference archive page

Agenda The larger purpose of this e-conference is to share information on the state of our understanding and ability to forecast large-scale natural hazards in remote mountainous destinations and to discuss strategies for the mitigation of these hazards that will take into account the losses and disruption incurred by inaccurate predictions.

A specific area of major attention will be the hazard of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), and, as a geographic example, Rolwaling Valley, Nepal. However, the scope of the conference is global and not limited to any particular hazard.

We invite "e-presentations" on:

  • The past impact of specific disasters on mountain tourism
  • Prediction and mitigation of earthquake, mass-wasting, avalanche, flood in remote mountainous regions
  • The impact of climate change on mountain hazards
  • Adventure tourism, mountaineering, and the pursuit of danger
Summaries and selected presentations will be published in the Himalayan Journal of Sciences.

Although our primary focus will be on natural hazards, human impact is inevitably a significant component in the magnitude, frequency, and risk exposure of these events. Some collateral attention may be given to military conflict in mountainous regions, as the risks are in many ways parallel to those of natural disasters.

Keynote "Fools Rush In: A Mountain Dilemma," by Prof. Jack D. Ives, Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada.

Featured Presentation "Glacial hazard assessment and risk management: lessons from Tsho Rolpa and new perspectives," by Professor John M. Reynolds, Managing Director, Reynolds Geo-Sciences, Ltd. (RGSL) Article about Reynolds in Prof. John Reynolds and RGSL featured in the North Wales Profile Business Magazine, May 2006, Issue 3
